The building on the square beside the church tower

The setting

A grand late-nineteenth-century building completing the edge of Plaza del Marqués de Muros, the town's main square.

Three exposed façades, a square plan over three storeys and an attic; painted rubble masonry, with dressed stone at the base, corners, string courses and cornice. On the main façade, a pair of finely crafted glazed bay windows flank a classical pediment. The renovation treats this listed building with the respect it deserves: restoring what can be saved and faithfully recreating what cannot, including its glazed galleries and external joinery.

The staircase

The timber staircase and wrought-iron balustrade have been brought back as the heart of the building, alongside the timber floors, internal shutters and door mouldings.

The apartments

Six holiday apartments, two on each floor, with a shared space beneath the roof. A building in conversation with its surroundings, giving something back to the community it belongs to.

On site

Carefully taking things apart to put them back together: the staircase propped in place, the floor structures exposed, the bay windows rebuilt in the workshop.

Every door moulding and every baluster restored, one by one. Construction: Desarrolla.

Identity

The name is a tribute to the late-nineteenth-century artists' colony in Muros — a gathering of artists, including Sorolla and Rubén Darío, who briefly put the town on the cultural map.

Hence the names of the apartments. Our studio also took care of the branding, graphic design and its application throughout the interiors: building signs, individual apartment signage and names spelled out in mosaic tiles on the bathroom floors.
