The setting
Narrowness as the starting point. A house designed from the inside out, with a maximum width of just 3.4 metres.
Minimum dimensions set by housing regulations become a design tool. The house takes a fresh look at local building traditions — glazed galleries, covered balconies, delicate eaves and rendered walls — and at the bold, simple shape of the Asturian hay barn. Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation and Japan's tiny homes offer further inspiration.

Narrowness
A hybrid steel structure and light-gauge steel frame keeps the walls beautifully slim, while nodding to the area's industrial past.

Inside
A holiday home, with daytime life downstairs and bedrooms above. Lightweight dry construction, external insulation and an air-source heat pump; generous south-facing windows shaded by deciduous trees, and cross-ventilation.

On site
A hybrid steel structure and light-gauge steel frame: slender walls to keep the house within its 3.4-metre width.
Lightweight, quick, dry construction, with a nod to the area's industrial heritage.
