The setting
Alemar begins with the sweep of a scythe through grass: two curves meeting at the front door.
Inspired by the porches of the traditional mariñana houses, Alemar reimagines the Asturian farmstead as interlocking volumes. From the central hall, the rooms unfold to either side, like the house, hayloft and stable of old. The sweeping curve shelters the home from the prevailing coastal winds, while the metal-clad mono-pitched roofs recall the simple lean-tos of vernacular buildings.

The sheltered walkway
A planted roof, like a meadow lifted into the air, connects the living room to the main bedroom and allows the whole house to be crossed without stepping out into the rain.

Inside
Two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, all with direct access to the garden. A break in the garage's footprint creates a passage to the back of the plot.

On site
The two curves of the scythe, first on paper, then in the air.
Slender steel columns and a curved beam support the planted roof of the sheltered walkway.
