ALBION985

The setting
A plot 15 metres wide and 72 metres long. Casa Albion grew out of the challenge of making a home on a rather unpromising strip of land.
The programme is broken into a series of boxes that come together again across the plot: the solids become the house; the spaces between become a succession of garden courtyards, each with its own purpose and connection to the rooms inside — a breakfast courtyard, a place for drying laundry, a little garden outside the guest bedroom. At the front, a garage and studio with their own entrance; at the back, the house; between them, the main courtyard, sun terrace and pool.

Charred timber
A house of quiet simplicity, a backdrop to the garden's abundant greenery, wrapped in a single material with a wonderfully natural character: shou sugi ban.

Inside
Behind the charred timber lies a low-energy home designed around Passivhaus principles. Its locally sourced lightweight timber frame was made in Gijón, with dry construction methods used from the foundations up. The result: remarkably low energy use and year-round comfort.

On site
Designed and built by the same team: the timber frame rises box by box, just as it was drawn.
Locally sourced timber structure and dry construction from the foundations upwards. Construction managed by Jorge López.
